The company is giving developers two weeks to move their projects offline and back up the data

Back-end cloud development startup Nitrous.io, based in both Singapore and San Francisco, announced today in a blog post that it will be closing its doors on November 14.

According to the post, users with an active workstation will be emailed a link that allows them to download their backup data. Additionally, any payments made after Oct. 16 (about two weeks ago) will be refunded in full.

Formerly known as Action.io, the company will release a self-hosted and open-source version of its Nitrous integrated development environment (IDE) called Nitrous Solo. It will be free and will allow developers to host their own instance of Nitrous IDE.

Nitrous.io said it will update users on the status of the open source IDE in the coming weeks. However, unless fans explicitly sign up for updates about the open source, they will not get any updates because all email subscriptions will cease on November 30.

Nitrous.io was a fairly popular IDE amongst developers, grabbing almost 100,000 users in its first year. The service allowed programmers to develop quick start templates across various languages and platforms (ranging from WordPress to Ruby on Rails to Python).

The idea was to speed up the process for coders to build testing environments, which could take anywhere from half-a-day to a few days depending on skills and experience. Nitrous.io allowed developers to bypass the configuration process and allows them to just ‘start coding’.

The company had raised a US$6.65 million Series A round in 2014 and had a host of high-profile investors including — among others — Golden Gate Ventures, 500 Startups, Facebook Co-founder Eduardo Saverin, LionRock Capital and CrunchFund.

After it raised the funds, Nitrous.io was going to target enterprise developers who could benefit from Nitrous.io to speed up the process of building a development environment.

Nitrous.io did face major competition from Cloud9, another IDE that was acquired by the cloud computing giant Amazon Web Services in July.
